When a dental student arrives at the Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry, they have accepted the challenge to:

By selecting a diverse body of students who individually demonstrate a commitment to service, possess cultural sensitivities, indicate the ability to successfully complete our rigorous curriculum, conduct research, and serve underserved populations in the Meharry tradition, the School of Dentistry plays a vital role in meeting the needs of the entire social spectrum.

Our graduates have received international recognition for their achievements, performance, and service, blazing trails with innovative ideas and compassionate hearts. Many having forged into a special focus on providing care for the underserved. Others serve in the military, private practice, and on the faculties of many of the United States dental schools. All carry with them Meharry's mission and legacy, acknowledging the blessings of the past and taking the progress of the present to make an expansive impact in the future.

They may arrive here ready to receive a quality dental education, but they will leave here ready to serve as dental professionals dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and service with a promise to pursue global health equity for all.

Academic Departments

The School of Dentistry offers a four-year pre-doctoral program in general dentistry, which is designed to prepare the matriculant to provide competent oral health services to the population at large. We also offer graduate programs in General Dentistry and in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Ph.D./D.D.S.

Our programs include an interdisciplinary curriculum of didactic and clinical experiences that provide a diverse knowledge base, clinical skills, and competencies necessary in the practice of modern general dentistry. Students gain clinical experiences in other settings such as hospitals, public health facilities, and other extramural environments as a part of the overall pre-doctoral program.

The curriculum is dynamic, constantly changing in response to contemporary trends in dental education and practice. The School of Dentistry will modify any portion of the curriculum and will make such changes as necessary with a commitment to maintaining an overall academic program that meets the highest standards.

Overall, the program is rigorous and challenging, but instills a solid base for scientific inquiry and for a lifelong pursuit of continuous education.

Continuing Education/Lifelong Learning

The Office of Lifelong Learning certifies continuing education activities and jointly sponsored activities in accordance with guidelines and standards put forth by the Accreditation Council for Medical Education (ACCME) and the American Dental Association's Continuing Education Recognition Program (ADA CERP).

Through regularly scheduled series, workshops, lectures, conferences, symposia, workshops, enduring materials, and other continuing education activities, healthcare professionals and faculty from all over the country improve the competence and performance practice skills that will ultimately improve patience care and health outcomes. The Office of Lifelong Learning, in step with Meharry's overall mission, remains committed to a high-quality continuing education program that regularly assesses course efficacies in terms of this goal.

This also requires us to stay current and informed on all ACCME and ADA CERP guidelines, which segues into another aspect of our department. We work with ideas and help plan, recommending 9–12 months of lead time to implement new activities (regularly scheduled activities usually require only three months).

We also encourage non-physician healthcare professionals to participate in our events when appropriate. Certificates are provided to those who are not eligible for ACCME AMA PRA Category 1 and ADA CERP credit.
