About The University of Tennessee UT Health Science Center

The UTHSC College of Dentistry was founded in 1878 making it the oldest dental college in the South, and the third oldest public college of dentistry in the United States. The College is located in downtown Memphis, Tennessee, in the Winfield C. Dunn Building at 875 Union Avenue.

The College maintains a 4-year dental program totaling approximately 320 students. In addition, students in Postgraduate dental programs and Dental Hygiene are included.

The College is dedicated to provide professional, graduate, and postgraduate education; conduct dental research; and deliver state-of-the-art patient care and public service.

Postgraduate Dental Education Programs

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Dentistry offers postgraduate dental education programs in Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontology and Prosthodontics. These programs prepare dentists for specialty practice and satisfy the educational requirements of their respective specialty boards.

A Certificate of Proficiency is awarded following successful completion of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Endodontics and Pediatric Dentistry programs. Both a Certificate of Proficiency and a Master of Dental Science degree are required and awarded upon successful completion of the Orthodontics, Periodontology and Prosthodontic programs. A course of study leading to a Master of Dental Science degree can be arranged in Endodontics and the Pediatric Dentistry Program. For more information about the UTHSC-AEGD Program, please visit the Lutheran Medical Center website.

The College of Dentistry also offers an Advanced Education in General Dentistry program. This 1-year program is a component of a cluster of programs operated and sponsored by the Lutheran Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York.

Other postgraduate programs may be provided in special circumstances, including postdoctoral fellowships and other special course work for non-degree and non-certificate students.

All state boards of Dentistry require both Dentists and Dental Hygienists to complete various hours of continuing education annually in accordance with their state's dental rules and regulations for licensing. The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry is designated a nationally approved sponsor by the Academy of General Dentistry. The formal continuing education programs of this sponsor are accepted by AGD for Fellowship, Mastership, and membership maintenance credit. In so doing, some presentations may include controversial material or commercial reference. Please be aware that the presentation of such course material should not be considered as an endorsement or approval of a particular philosophy, product, or procedure. Courses presented are acceptable by those states that recognize the ADA (CERP) and AGD approved providers.
